Hawaiian Canoe 2/2 with hand painted sail

USD 1,370.00

In the mid-19th century, as more Europeans arrived in the "Sandwich Islands," the elite of the Hawaiian islands became acquainted with Western fabrics. During this time, an increasing number of Hawaiians began working on sailing ships, gaining valuable knowledge about rigging. Consequently, it didn’t take long for Hawaiians to adopt the cloth sprit sail, which was much easier and quicker to construct than traditional sails made from pandanus leaves.

A typical example of this innovation is this fishing canoe model featuring a sprit sail, beautifully decorated with a hand-painted honu *. The model measures 14 inches long and is intricately carved from exotic wood. It is presented on a wooden base, as shown in the pictures. Additionally, you will receive a five-sided high quality showcase designed to protect the model, with dimensions of 16 inches in length, 13 inches in height, and 7,5 inches in width, to fit the wooden base.
