This hand-crafted scale model, a testament to the skill and artistry of Francis Pimmel, Hawaii's renowned scale modeler of Polynesian canoes, is an "Opelu" type canoe. This generic term is given to 18'-25' long, heavily constructed, deep wide fishing canoes used during the 19th and 20th centuries, each one a unique work of art.

This model has been constructed in the same way as his life-size namesake, using the same kind of wood, namely Koa, and replicating all its various construction elements. The model is wide by 12 inches; its height is 15" 1/4 on its wave-like stand but 11"1/4 from the bottom of the hull to the top of the mast.
